Why should I have a facial and if so, how often should I have one?

One of the most frequently asked questions when I am working on waxing or makeup clients is, “should I be having facials?”  YES OF COURSE! You get your car washed and you go to the dentist right?

Now, choosing what type of facial and how often depends on your skincare concerns and goals, your current skin condition, age and health.  Facials help remove surface debris, dirt and old skin cells that make us look dull, tired and exhausted!  We have so many advances in skincare now that a, “basic facial” usually is an enzyme such as pumpkin or fruits that will gently remove the dead surface skin cells and relaxing massage and finishing mask, which is great for your skin in and of itself.  More importantly, a good Esthetician can usually spot trouble before it gets out of control.  If something looks suspicious on your skin she will recommend you to see a Dermatologist for medical advice.  We do not diagnose skin disorders, but we can help with making sure you are aware of your skin.

Facials that use acids, like lactic, Jessners or retinoids will help lighten, brighten, improve the look of fine lines and hydrate as well as exfoliate.  They can also go deeper and have a physical peeling action which will require, “down time”.  This is when the dead cells will peel and shed as if you had a sunburn, but the results are well worth it!  Great for deeper sunspots and acne or just prepping for the big event you have coming up.  These sorts of peels do require you to use certain skincare products prior to the treatment and a restricted skincare routine after as well as a follow up visit.

Microdermabrasion,  lasers and radio frequency skin tightening treatmtents such as Pelleve’ are other facial options to soften your skin, polish and brighten and reduce surface wrinkles.

At to make Beautiful we start out slowly in order to get to know your skin, your sensitivity level and how your skin reacts and then we decide to go to the next step with more aggressive facials.

So, to sum it all up it’s best to book a consultation along with a basic facial and at least start with a great skincare regime at home then make a plan with your Esthetician to get your skin healthy and happy!

New Year’s Resolution for 2012 to be More Beautiful

Are you planning on making a New Year’s Resolution to maybe lose some weight, get in shape, save more money?

How about a resolution to BE more beautiful?

We can change our color lipstick, eyeshadow, blush or cut our hair and that can certainly make us look more beautiful, but I am thinking more along the lines of BEING more beautiful. Using your mouth to speak kind workds, or saying you are sorry to resolve an old issue.  Giving looks of kindness or compassion instead of dirty looks when someone rushes past you while driving, maybe they were in a rush to visit a sick loved one.  Smiling when a stranger looks at you instead of being defensive and asking what they are looking at.

Beauty is an attitude.  It is the way we carry ourselves and the way we treat people when no one else is looking.

Makeup can’t conceal ugly. In 2012, let’s all try TO MAKE BEAUTIFUL changes and see what happens.

Happy and Healthy 2012 to you and yours,

Kim

Pelleve’ Wrinkle Reduction / Skin Tightening

I am happy to announce that I have just been certified in the Pelleve’ Wrinkle reduction / skin tightening system!

The awesome thing about this treatment is that there is ZERO down time.  Before you consider an injectible or Botox consider Pelleve’.  In ONE treatment people have noticed an improvement.  3 are the average recommended

The Pellevé System delivers constant, gradual radio-frequency energy deeply into the skin, causing heat to build up where the skin and fat layer meet. The increasing heat modifies the collagen bundles deep in the skin, causing contraction and stimulating the growth of new collagen over time. The result: firmer, tighter, more youthful skin.  You can have treatments 4 weeks apart and collagen will continue to improve over 6 months.

This is done at Cos-medica laser center in Wakefield, MA.  Ask for Kim when booking!

Check out some of the kudos from Dr. OZ and The Doctors! http://www.pelleve.com/ex1/media.html

Getting Wedding Ready

Wedding makeup
The final touches

Every bride wants to look radiant on her wedding day and makeup alone isn’t going to do that.  If you plan it right you can achieve the most perfect face a camera has ever seen with a few good months of prepping.  Working from the inside out, first of all keep up on your water intake.  The stress of the planning to perfect your day will more than likely be taking it’s toll on your skin.  The erroneous breakout, the dry skin and the lack of hydration.

Next, make sure you are getting some well needed sleep. I know it sounds so cliche’, but sleep is when the body and skin repairs itself.  Of course I must mention a healthy diet of fruits, vegetables, lean meats and your omegas!  Those are the bare basics, now onto skin prepping.

Start to plan regularly scheduled facials and if you don’t already have one, a skin care regime 6-12 months prior is great.  If you have any skin concerns, pigment issues, lines, wrinkles, breakouts now is the time to start addressing them.  It will give you and your Esthetician plenty of time to go gently and not cause any further damage.  You don’t want to look like Samantha in Sex in the city after her chemical peel do you??  If your skin is in decent shape facials can be a  perfect way to ensure your skin is hydrated, healthy and it gives you an opportunity to grab some of that rest that you are going to need so you don’t have those circles under your eyes in your wedding photos.

Laser treatments are going to take a few months to do the job as well. Hair removal can only be done approximately every 8 weeks and can be anywhere from 6-12 visits before the hair starts to disappear.  So the sooner the better with that one.  Get your brows shaped or even reshaped by a professional as well.  Sometimes brows need help growing in and may require some regrowth serums.  If you are thinking of  Botox or injectibles you may want to do a small patch test on an area that isn’t noticeable like maybe your forehead under your bangs for Botox or maybe a smaller dose of a filler in your lips well in advance.   If the result isn’t what you desired you will have plenty of time to counter act the results as to not ruin your wedding day.  And of course, secure your makeup artist and hair stylist as soon as you can.  I’ve run into a lot of situations where brides are calling a month or even weeks before their wedding day asking for availability and sometimes I’ve been unable to find another makeup artist that I trust to hand the job off to.  You need to have a pretrial consultation before the wedding and give yourself enough time to find more than one just in case you are not happy with your first choice.

Lastly, know that in the end all of this prepping is really about showing the world your big bright smile for finding the person you want to share your life with, so enjoy the prepping!

Beautiful Skin Diet

Beautiful Skin Diet

The following food are known to contain lots of antioxidants, vitamins, nutrients that give you a clear, acne free and healthy looking skin:

(1) Consume these healthy fats – Omega-3 fatty acids and Omega-6 fatty acids are essential fats that the body cannot produce. They must be consumed through diet. These essential fats are responsible for reducing skin inflammation and improving blood circulation, giving you a clear, glowing skin and helping you to prevent premature aging. Food that are rich in these healthy fats include salmon, sardines, mackerels, nuts (walnuts, almonds), seeds (pumpkins, sunflower), and flaxseed and olive oil.

 (2) Eat fish 3 times a week. Since these fish can contain toxic metals, consumption of these fish should be limited to 3 times a week.

(3) Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables each day – colorful fruits and vegetables, garlic, and onions are essential for clear, healthy skin. The more colors, the more they contain antioxidants and vitamins. Carrots, tomatoes, romaine lettuces, spinach, cantaloupes, berries, beets, cabbages, broccolis, and kales are excellent sources.

(4) Get Enough Fiber – Fibers aid the digestion process and helps to remove toxins from the body. Build-up of toxins are the main cause of acne and other skin problems. Food rich in fibers include oatmeals, whole grains, beans, lentils.

 (5) Eat organic and fresh, unprocessed food as much as possible – Chemicals and pesticides cause build up of toxins in the body and strain the liver. Too much toxins will result in dull, acne skin. Therefore, it is better to eat food that is fresh and organic as much as possible.

Eat dark chocolate – Dark chocolate contains a potent antioxidant known as polyphenols that can fight inflammation.

The above food is vital to supply your body with potent antioxidants and vitamins, while reducing inflammation and toxins build-up. Certain food, however, can have opposite effects and are considered bad for the skin.
